This month’s style studies aren’t just about me creating art of black women I admire in media…

They’re about studying black women who lived, and/or died walking at the beat of their own rhythm. From the beginning of this project, I knew Eartha Kitt would be one of the women I chose. I live by one of her quotes:

“I fell in love with myself and I want someone to share it with me. I want someone to share me with me.

Her energy, self-possession, self-awareness, self-romance lives in this reference photo in my opinion. It wasn’t just a pose, it was a mood. When it came to the completed piece, I’ll admit; it doesn’t look exactly like Eartha Kitt the way my Nina Simone study did, but C’EST SI BON!

I wasn’t trying to replicate her, I was trying to show my appreciation for her in my own style. Like the stars in eyes for both her and my Nina Simone piece, that was my interpretation of who they are TO ME.

True stars…
